Sree Valayanad Devi Temple

Sree Valayanad Devi Temple, located in the heart of Kozhikode (Calicut), Kerala, is one of the most revered Devi temples in North Kerala. The presiding deity, Goddess Valayanad Bhagavathi, is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parashakti, worshipped here in her fierce form as Chandika. The temple stands as a spiritual and cultural landmark, known for its unique rituals and strong association with the Zamorin royal family of Calicut.

According to legend, Goddess Chandika appeared before the Zamorin (Samoothiri) after he performed severe penance, seeking protection and divine grace. The Devi instructed him to construct a temple at Valayanad, where she would manifest in her most powerful form. The temple was thus built following Vaishnava traditions, which is distinct among Devi temples that usually follow Shaiva or Shakta customs.

It is believed that the Goddess here was once worshipped by the Arya community, and later, the Zamorins adopted her as their kuladevata (family deity). The name “Valayanad” is derived from “Valayal” meaning bangle and “Nadu” meaning place — symbolizing the sacred land of the divine mother adorned with bangles.
