Sree Vadakkumnathan Temple
Sree Vadakkumnathan Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples in Kerala, situated in the heart of Thrissur city. The temple stands as a masterpiece of Kerala’s architectural and cultural heritage, enclosed by massive stone walls and surrounded by lush greenery on a hillock known as Thekkinkadu Maidan. The temple’s name “Vadakkumnathan” translates to “Lord of the North”, referring to Lord Shiva.
The temple showcases classical Kerala temple architecture — featuring multi-tiered roofs, intricate wood carvings, and murals depicting stories from the Mahabharata. The temple complex includes four majestic gopurams (gateways) facing cardinal directions, and the central sanctum is surrounded by massive walls with beautifully carved wooden panels.
The temple murals, especially the one depicting the story of Mahabharata, are among the finest examples of traditional Kerala mural art.
The world-famous Thrissur Pooram, often called the “Festival of Festivals,” is held annually in the Thekkinkadu Maidan surrounding the temple. It was introduced by Raja Rama Varma (Sakthan Thampuran) in the late 18th century. The grand display of decorated elephants, traditional percussion, and fireworks attracts devotees and tourists from across the world.
