Karikkakom Sree Chamundi Devi Temple, located about 7 km from the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, is one of Kerala’s most revered and ancient temples dedicated to Goddess Chamundi, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The temple is believed to be over 700 years old and is surrounded by serene greenery, adding to its divine and tranquil atmosphere.

The presiding deity, Goddess Karikkakom Chamundi Devi, is worshipped in three different forms — Maha Chamundi, Raktha Chamundi, and Bala Chamundi — each symbolizing the goddess’s varying aspects of power, destruction, and benevolence. The temple is also unique for housing a separate sanctum for Raktha Chamundi, where only priests are allowed entry, as she represents the fierce form of the goddess.

The annual Chamundi Pongala festival is a major attraction that draws thousands of women devotees who prepare the ritual offering of sweet rice to seek the blessings of the goddess. The temple’s architecture, adorned with intricate wood carvings and murals, reflects the traditional Kerala temple style, adding cultural and historical value to the site.

Apart from its religious significance, the Karikkakom Sree Chamundi Temple is also known for its association with justice. Historically, disputes were brought before the goddess, and truth-seekers took oaths at the temple, believing that the deity would punish the wrongdoers.

A visit to the Karikkakom Sree Chamundi Temple offers not just spiritual solace but also a glimpse into Kerala’s deep-rooted traditions, sacred art, and unwavering devotion.
