Ettumanoor Shri Mahadeva Temple, located in Kottayam district of Kerala, is one of the most revered Shiva temples in South India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Mahadeva, this ancient temple is renowned for its spiritual significance, architectural grandeur, and the rich traditions of Kerala’s temple culture.

Believed to have been established thousands of years ago, the temple finds mention in ancient scriptures and legends. According to mythology, the great Pandavas and sage Vyasa are said to have worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred site. The current temple structure, built in the Dravidian style, showcases exquisite wood carvings, mural paintings, and copper roofing that reflect the craftsmanship of early Kerala temple architecture.

The central sanctum houses a majestic Shiva Lingam, radiating divine energy and serenity. Surrounding shrines are dedicated to deities such as Lord Ganapathi, Lord Sastha, Goddess Bhagavathi, and Nagaraja, adding to the temple’s sanctity. The temple is particularly famous for the Ezhara Ponnana (Seven and a Half Golden Elephants)—a set of gold-covered idols symbolizing prosperity and royal offering to Lord Shiva, which are displayed during the annual festival.

The Ettumanoor Utsavam, celebrated in February–March, is one of Kerala’s most vibrant temple festivals. The highlight of the festival is the Ezharaponnana Darshan, where devotees can witness the golden elephants in their full grandeur. The festival also includes traditional art forms, processions, and spiritual rituals that draw thousands of devotees every year.

Ettumanoor Shri Mahadeva Temple stands as a timeless symbol of devotion, art, and culture—where the divine presence of Lord Shiva continues to bless devotees with peace and prosperity.
