Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, located in the heart of Alappuzha district, Kerala, is one of the most celebrated temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. Often referred to as the “Dwarka of the South,” this sacred shrine is renowned for its beautiful idol of Lord Krishna, depicted in the child form holding a pot of butter, reminiscent of the divine mischievousness of Unnikrishnan.

The temple was established in the 15th century by the ruler Chembakassery Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan Thampuran. According to legend, the deity of Ambalappuzha was brought from the Guruvayur Temple to protect it from possible invasion, thus linking both temples in a spiritual bond. The famous “Ambalappuzha Palpayasam” offering began as a divine decree from Lord Krishna himself, and devotees believe that anyone partaking in it is blessed with prosperity and spiritual fulfillment.

Built in the traditional Kerala temple architectural style, the temple features exquisite woodwork, murals, and a serene ambience that evokes deep devotion. The sanctum sanctorum houses the enchanting idol of Lord Krishna made of black granite, symbolizing eternal bliss and divine energy.

The annual Ambalappuzha Arattu Festival, held during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April), is the temple’s grand celebration. Another highlight is the Aattam Thullal art form, which was first introduced here by the renowned poet Kunjan Nambiar. The temple’s famed Palpayasam (sweet milk pudding) is a sacred offering distributed daily and has become a symbol of the temple’s divine grace.

Ambalappuzha Temple stands as a beacon of devotion, culture, and heritage. Pilgrims visit from across the country to seek blessings from Lord Krishna, whose presence here continues to inspire love, compassion, and faith.
