Aazhimala Shiva Temple
Aazhimala Shiva Temple is one of the most revered and scenic temples in Kerala, located near Vizhinjam, about 20 km from Thiruvananthapuram city. Perched on a cliff overlooking the vast Arabian Sea, the temple offers a divine atmosphere where spirituality meets natural beauty.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as the protector of the sea and seafarers. The name Aazhimala comes from the Malayalam words “Aazhi” meaning sea and “Mala” meaning hill — together symbolizing “the hill by the sea.”
One of the temple’s most striking features is the towering 58-feet-tall statue of Lord Shiva, known as the Gangadhareshwara form — depicting Shiva with flowing locks holding the sacred River Ganga. The intricate sculpture, set against the blue expanse of the ocean, has become a landmark and a major attraction for devotees and tourists alike.
The temple is believed to be ancient, with deep spiritual roots connected to seafarers and fishermen who sought blessings from Lord Shiva before venturing into the sea. The Aazhimala Mahasivarathri festival is celebrated here with great devotion, drawing thousands of devotees every year.
Visitors to the temple not only experience its spiritual energy but also the breathtaking views of the coastline, especially during sunrise and sunset. The rhythmic sound of the waves, the cool sea breeze, and the divine presence of Lord Shiva make Aazhimala a place of peace and transcendence.
